Dr Ashwani Mahajan, Professor at the Department of Economics, PGDAV College of the Delhi University, whose name appears in Wikipedia’s list of 21st Century Indian Economist, has been a prolific contributor to various newspapers, magazines and journals on topics ranging from economy, business to socio-political issues.
Dr Mahajan completed his B A (Hons) in Economics from University of Delhi (1980), Masters in Economics from Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi (1982) and then went on to obtain his doctoral degree in Economics from University of Lucknow (1994). Before joining the PGDAV College, where he has taught for the last 40 years since October 24, 1983, he had a short stint as lecturer at the Sheri Ram College of Commerce (Delhi University) from September 1982 to December 1982.
Specialising in ‘Public Economics’, ‘Monetary Economics’ and ‘Indian Economy’, he has authored over a dozen books; contributed to research journals such as Economic & Political Weekly, South Asia Economic Journal, Pacific Business Review International, Indian Economy Almanac, Mainstream etc. and written opinion pieces/op-ed pieces for newspapers and news magazines across India such as The Economic Times, Statesman, Pioneer, Deccan Herald, Indian Express, New Indian Express, Daily Excelsior and a number of National Hindi Dailies.
Dr Mahajan was awarded the ‘Best Student Union Advisor’ award at the University of Delhi in 1995. For his contribution in the field of Economics, he was also awarded with prestigious Skoch Award in 2019. He participated in five WTO Ministerial Conferences. He has been appearing in various television channels as an Economist on the current economic issues. Till date, Dr Mahajan has guided 12 students for M Phil and a Ph D.
